CHIACGO, IL -- Despite having been a Michigan fan for his entire life, Steve Lannen ran the 2015 Big10K wearing a Maryland jersey. When asked why he was supporting the Terps instead of the Wolverines, he was quoted as saying, "I have an Masters degree from Maryland! And I don't Fear the Turtle."
His parents, staunch life-long supporters of Michigan, were in attendance and cheered him on, but were reportedly disgusted in private.
CHICAGO, IL -- Avid Univesity of Kentucky basketball fan Steve Lannen bought his relatively new girlfriend, Christina Iskandar, tickets to see the John Wooden Classic where Ms. Iskandar's collegiate team, UCLA, would play his beloved UK team at the United Center in Chicago.
Unbeknownst to him, UCLA would go on to play the worst game of its storied history, scoring only 9 points in the first half. Ms. Iskandar, despondent, managed to stay until the end but only because Mr. Lannen continued to provide her with strong drinks and had even stopped clapping for UK somewhere around the 2nd quarter.
The final score was 83-44, University of Kentucky.
Ms. Iskandar got some redemption two years later when going to a UCLA v. Kentucky game and winning 97 to 92.
ANN ARBOR, MI -- Despite also playing football, being on the wrestling team, and having a myriad of other extracurriculars while a student at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Steve also decided to play lacrosse, picking up the unenviable position of goalie.
Steve's parents, Jim and Laurel, attended some of the Pioneer High School lacrosse games. Games were played in the spring, probably starting in late March or early April. Jim points out that "in Michigan at that time of year there could be snow flurries or worse. Certainly long underwear weather. And those bleachers were cold and hard as a rock for my bottom." That is dedication!
Jim also notes, "As a child Steve always liked to roughhouse and so it wasn’t surprising that he liked to play lacrosse. It’s a game where it’s legal to club another player with a racquet."
